Recipe: Ginger Bread

Ingredients
Ingredient Qty. Unit
margarine or butter 1/2 c
sugar 1/2 c
egg, beaten 1 ea
flour 2 1/2 c
baking soda 1 1/2 tsp
ginger 1 tsp
cloves 1/2 tsp
hot water 1 c
molasses 1 c

Instructions
1) Preheat oven to 350 and grease a baking pan

2) Cream butter with sugar, add egg and mix.

3) In a separate bowl, sift dry ingredients together

4) In a separate bowl, mix molasses and hot water

5) Add dry ingredients to butter/sugar/egg, alternating with the molasses/water mixture. Beat after each addition.

6) Bake at 350 for 45 minutes.

7) For cupcakes, fill papered cupcake pans 2/3 full and bake at 350 for 20 minutes. Makes 16-18.

8) Story: Ellie says: Sean and I made this one day after the boys went to school. After the ginger bread cools completely and sits for a few hours, the top becomes very moist and kind of sticky. It's the absolute best part of the dessert! Well, all the boys used to love the top moist part the best. On this occasion, Sean decided a finger scrape across the top wouldn't be enough. He laid his whole hand on the top and then pulled it off. I found him licking his hand clean and a cute hand imprint on the top of the ginger bread! :) I think he was about 3 - 3 1/2 years at the time.
